Assassin’s Creed III was officially announced earlier this year by Ubisoft and is the fifth game in the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot says the development team has “working for three years” on the game and it will feature an all new Story mode as well as a re-designed Online Multiplayer mode. The game will run on the ‘AnvilNext’ game engine delivering the best visual and audio experience so far in the AC series. Assassin’s Creed 3 will be out on the PlayStation3 & Xbox360 on 31st October 2012 & on Nintendo’s up-coming Wii U on November 18th NTSC & November 30th, PAL. It has now been confirmed that the game will be delayed for PC gamers until 28th November.

Assassin’s Creed is the story of one man reliving the lives of his ancestors. Altaïr was the middle of a very very long time-line. There are still many places to explore.
Assassin’s Creed has always been planned to be a trilogy, and Desmond is going back in time, using theAnimus to eventually become the ultimate Assassin.”

Story:

Assassins Creed III will follow the story of Connor Kenway, a half-British and half-Native American boy who is born during the American Revolutionary War. The game will run over a time period of 30 years, (1753 and 1783) so during the game we’ll be following Connor right from when he’s a little boy growing up during the Revolution. We know that sometime in his childhood Connor will go through some form of tragedy and becomes separated from his parents. He is then raised by the Mohawk people and vows to spend the rest of his life seeking revenge on the enemy that separated him from his parents. During the game much of your time will be spent exploring what Ubisoft calls the ‘Frontier’ which is said to be almost twice the size of Rome in AC: Brotherhood.

Ubisoft have also said that Assassins Creed III will complete the story of Desmond Miles.

Setting/Environment:

The game will feature many historical events during the period of the American revolution. Some iconic events will include the Great fire of New York, Valley Froge, and the crossing of Delaware. Assassins Creed 3 will be set around the areas of Boston and New York between the years 1753 and 1783. Boston will be the biggest city of exploration between the two and were told we’ll be witnessing some major changes to the city throughout the course of the game. Both cities will feature tall brick homes, churches and large docks with ships leaving and arriving daily as well as a wide range of climbing opportunities. The Great Fire of New York in 1776 that left a quarter of the city in ruins is just one example of the many historical events we can expect to visit in the game. Ubisoft has revealed some information about the ‘Battlefields’ in the game, we know the game will feature many large battles with hundreds of soldiers all fighting at once. Connor will often has his own objective during major battles but will still be in the middle of conflict dodging enemy bullets and cannon balls. One of the coolest things I’ve heard about Assassins Creed III so far is that you’ll have the ability to climb and swing between branches on trees, the game will also  feature seasons – winter and summer. Seasons will have quite an effect on the game as NPC characters will behave according to the season.

Characters:

The main character of Assassins Creed 3 will be known as Joseph Connor, he comes from a native American mother and a English father.  It was also said that up to 80% of all the characters you’ll meet in the game would have actually existed at some point in history. Four supporting characters have also been confirmed so far and they are:

  • George Washington - the US President during the time of the revolution.
  • Benjamin Franklin - An inventor, politician and author.
  • Charles Lee - An acquaintance of George Washington
  • The Marquis de Lafayette - French aristocrat who served as a major-general in American army

New Enemies:

In Assassins Creed 3, enemies will range from Templers, Soldiers to the local wildlife (bears, wolves etc). Enemies who carry muskets are weaker than those who carry axes, although enemies armed with muskets will fire at Connor while he is engaged in combat with other enemies. The new engine for the game, AnvilNext, allows for up to 2000 enemies on the screen at any one time.

Like mentioned before enemies will include wildlife, most animals can be hunted for resources like food, clothing etc. but then can also be sold in return for other goods.

Gameplay/Combat:

Ubisoft have said they’ve taken a whole new approach to combat in Assassins Creed 3 it’s now “more realistic.” Where you can have up to several enemies attacking you at once and now you can be hide or take cover behind people. The control scheme in the game has also been re-done and what’s cool is now you have the ability to control the legendary leap of faith we’ve seen in past Assassin Creed games. So now when performing the leap of faith there’s that slight chance you might miss the hay stack & fall to your death.

New and improved methods of movement in Assassins Creed III include; climbing trees, sclaing cliffs, leaping over wagons, running assassinations, tree climbing, sliding under obstacles,  jumping through windows, to trees, and then onto rooftops and zip lining

Two New gameplay types were also revealed and they are:

  • Hunting - You are rewarded on how quickly and efficiently you kill or catch certain wildlife. Some forms of wildlife you can be expecting to encounter are eagles, wolves, bears and deer.
  • Naval Warfare - Connor will have full control of a naval battleship, which in the game can be used for both navigation and battles. During naval battles you will have full control over the ships crew and weaponry.

The regenerative health system we’ve seen in previous Assassin Creed games will return in III, and in order to regain his health, Connor must escape from combat and find somewhere to rest.

Graphics:

The game runs on a new game engine known as ‘AnvilNext’. The main focus when designing this new engine was improving environmental effects in the game. The game will feature seasonal changes; the landscape is warm and open in the summer, but is covered in snow during winter time, which subsequently affects gameplay and the way characters act.

In winter, the thick snow will cause people to move more slowly and stumble about, and lakes and rivers will freeze over, allowing Connor to access new areas. Although the seasons will change in line with specific memories fog and rain will change naturally.

Weapons:

So far we know that Conner will be equipped with:

  • Tomahawk
  • Hidden blades (can also be used as dagger)
  • Dual pistols
  • Musket
  • Bow & Arrows
  • Rope Hook
  • Sawtooth Sword (Unlockable pre order bonus)
  • Obwandiyag’s War Club

Multiplayer:

Once again an Online Multiplayer mode will be returning in Assassins Creed III and is being developed by Ubisoft Annecy, the same group who developed the multiplayer mode for Assassin’s Creed: Revelations and Asssassin’s Creed: Brotherhood.

Game Modes:

So far only two game modes have been revealed by Ubisoft and they are:

  • Wolf Pack - 2-4 players must hunt down and kill specific targets within a time limit.
